About Me
Becky Churney
I began my journey in education, working in a Head Start program. I felt helpless in my classroom-overwhelmed by the system and unable to create the change I knew my students needed. That sense of helplessness pushed me to pursue nursing. I believed that, as a nurse, I could help people in a more direct and meaningful way.
But as I entered the nursing field, I watched it undergo dramatic changes. The chaos of COVID only amplified an already disjointed system.
Then my aunt became critically ill. I was named her power of attorney, which meant I was the only person allowed to communicate with the hospital-and, due to restrictions, the only visitor permitted as well. My family trusted me to navigate the complexity, and they appreciated how I could explain technical information in a way that made sense.
Being in the hospital transformed me-painfully, but with purpose. I witnessed firsthand how we had lost the "care" in healthcare. What I heard-and what I saw-confirmed that nursing, at least in the traditional sense, was no longer my path.
But something else became clear: my heart was in advocacy. Speaking the language of healthcare gave me a unique ability to bridge the gap between patients and providers. I realized how vital it is for people to have someone in their corner-someone to help them understand, make decisions, and feel seen.
As my aunt's life drew to a close, my purpose came into focus. And then, as if guided, I discovered Doulagivers. I felt an immediate calling and began their training.
I can't wait to share what I've learned-and to welcome you into the next chapter of this deeply personal journey.
